Initial unemployment insurance claims rise for week ending January 2

BATON ROUGE – The initial unemployment insurance claims for the week ending January 2, 2021 rose to 25,365 from the week ending December 26, 2020 total of 8,246. For a comparison, during the week ending January 4, 2020, 1,469 initial claims were filed.

The four-week moving average of initial claims increased to 12,707 from the previous week’s average of 8,644.

The unemployment insurance continued claims for the week ending January 2, 2021 increased to 64,404 from the week ending December 26, 2020 total of 60,641. The continued claims were above the comparable figure of 15,270 for the week ending January 4, 2020.

The four-week moving average of continued claims decreased to 64,076 from the previous week’s average of 66,726.
