LWC's Rapid Response Team Assisting Phelps Correctional Employees

BATON ROUGE – The Louisiana Workforce Commission has mobilized its Rapid Response team to assist employees at C. Paul Phelps Correctional Center, which will close in November.

LWC’s Rapid Response program provides on-site services including skills assessments, resume preparation, retraining, information on occupations in demand in the area, job counseling, and assistance with job placements, out-of-area job searches, using computers plus a host of other services. Rapid Response personnel also will assist workers who don’t transition immediately to other jobs with filing unemployment insurance claims.

Services are fully funded through the LWC and available at no cost to workers.

The LWC has scheduled two worker orientation sessions at the prison to give employees an overview of all re-employment services available through the LWC. The orientation sessions are Thursday, Sept. 20, at 2:30 p.m., and Friday, Sept. 21, at 10 a.m. Department of Corrections personnel also will be present.

The LWC will offer its other services on site at the prison in facilities made available by the Department of Corrections to ensure smooth transitions for its employees. Service will be provided by LWC Rapid Response program staff as well as staff of the Workforce Investment Board in Calcasieu Parish.

The LWC is assisting prison officials host a job fair Sept. 26 from 1 to 5:30 p.m. in the visitation building for prison employees. Participating employers include Coushatta Casino, Isle of Capri Casino, Lake Charles Police Department, Polaris Construction, the U.S. Bureau of Prisons and Westaff, among others. Workers who are laid off can apply for unemployment insurance benefits online here. Those without Internet access or who have trouble with filing a claim can call the LWC toll-free at 1-866-783-5567.
