BATON ROUGE – Initial unemployment insurance claims for the week ending Sept. 14, 2013, increased to 2,663 from the previous week’s total of 2,190. The over-the-week increase in initial claims is due to a shorter work week the previous week ending Sept. 7, 2013, due to the Labor Day holiday. Initial claims were below the comparable week ending Sept. 15, 2012, figure of 4,873, when initial claims remained high due to Hurricane Isaac.
The four-week moving average of initial claims increased slightly to 2,448 from the previous week’s average of 2,441.
Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed for the week ending Sept. 14, 2013, decreased to 24,057 from the previous week’s total of 24,122. Continued weeks claimed were below the comparable week ending Sept. 15, 2012, figure of 33,459, when continued claims spiked due to Hurricane Isaac.
The four-week moving average of continued weeks claimed decreased to 24,832 from the previous week’s average of 25,388.
