Events geared for job seekers with disabilities as part of National Disability Employment Month

BATON ROUGE – Louisiana job seekers are encouraged to attend five different 2014 Diversity Works Job Fairs scheduled throughout the state for October, which is National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission is proud to sponsor the job fairs, which are open to anyone but especially geared for job seekers with disabilities. There is no cost to participate, and registration will be held at each event. Job seekers should to dress professionally, bring résumés and be prepared to interview.

The Diversity Works Job Fairs will be held in five regions as follows:

University of New Orleans, Lindy Boggs Conference Center – Oct. 15, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Slidell Municipal Auditorium – Oct. 16, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Lake Charles Civic Center - Oct. 21, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Shreveport RiverView Hall Theater - Oct. 27, 9 a.m. to noon

Monroe Civic Center - Oct. 28, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

At each job fair, job seekers will have the opportunity to attend a training session about managing and protecting Social Security benefits while enriching life through employment.

The job fairs are led by LWC’s Office of Workforce Development and underwritten by a federal Disability Employment Initiative grant. The job fairs are coordinated by a consortium of state agencies, non-profit organizations and private-sector companies working together to increase employment opportunities for people with disabilities in Louisiana.

Since the initiative began in Louisiana 11 years ago, these job fairs have connected an estimated 16,000 job seekers with more than 1,600 employers.
