Initial unemployment insurance claims rise for week ending Dec. 3

BATON ROUGE – Initial unemployment insurance claims for the week ending Dec. 3, 2016 increased to 3,109 from the previous week’s total of 2,029. Fewer initial claims were filed the previous week of the Thanksgiving and Acadian holidays resulting in this over-the-week increase. For the comparable week a year ago, ending Dec. 5, 2015, 2,414 initial claims were filed.

The four-week moving average of initial claims increased to 2,648 from the previous week’s average of 2,547.

Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed for the week ending Dec. 3, 2016 increased to 23,357 from the previous week’s total of 22,984. Continued weeks claimed were above the comparable figure of 21,501 for the week ending Dec. 5, 2015.

The four-week moving average of continued weeks claimed decreased to 23,131 from the previous week’s average of 23,171.

While the number of claims increased, Louisiana is coming off one of the largest over-the-month increases for October since 2008 with the addition of 7,300 nonfarm jobs. Additionally, in all nine metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs), unemployment rates decreased during the same time period. Employment data for November will be released on December 16, 2016.
