Initial unemployment insurance claims drop for week ending Sept. 16

BATON ROUGE – The initial unemployment insurance claims for the week ending Sept. 16, 2017 decreased to 2,232 from the previous week’s total of 2,375. For the comparable week a year ago, ending Sept. 17, 2016, 2,402 initial claims were filed.

The four-week moving average of initial claims decreased to 2,471 from the previous week’s average of 2,555.

The continued unemployment insurance claims for the week ending Sept. 16, 2017 decreased to 20,375 from the previous week’s total of 20,721. The continued claims were below the comparable figure of 27,190 for the week ending Sept. 17, 2016.

The four-week moving average of continued claims decreased to 20,861 from the previous week’s average of 21,296.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC) is committed to investing in the youth of tomorrow through on-site services and job-fair opportunities all across the state. On Thursday, September 21, 2017, the LWC partnered with employers and held 25 seasonal job-hiring events throughout the state at more than 20 LWC-sponsored Business and Career Solutions Centers for out of school youth ages 18-24.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC) has countless tools both in person and online to help claimants file and process their claims. This is in addition to the agency’s 59 local offices statewide, job fairs, training programs, apprenticeship opportunities and numerous other services.

Updates to the LWC’s unemployment information processing system are still being implemented. As a result, the following data are not currently available: the break-out of interstate claims, Louisiana unemployment insurance claimants' parish of residence, unemployment insurance claims by industry and UI claimants who have received at least one check during the reference month in Louisiana.
