Medical Assistant training available through free Ochsner program in Jefferson Parish
Morning, evening information sessions to be held on Dec. 11

BATON ROUGE The Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC) and Ochsner Health System have partnered to expand the successful Ochsner Medical Assistant Training Program and will host two information sessions next week to recruit persons interested in becoming certified Medical Assistants.

The comprehensive six-month program consists of instructor-led and online classes, as well as lab practicum and supervised clinical activities. Students will also receive hands-on training through clinical rotations in various departments at Ochsner facilities.

The information sessions will be held on Monday, December 11 at 11:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. at the Hazel Hurst Community Center in Jefferson, La. The Medical Assistant training program is tuition-free for eligible candidates.

Medical Assistants provide direct patient care under the supervision of a licensed healthcare provider. Duties include scheduling and receiving patients, preparing and maintaining medical records, taking patient histories and vital signs and assisting with examinations and treatments. They are also trained to operate equipment and respond to emergencies.

Program applications will be available at both LWC Business and Career Solutions Centers in Jefferson Parish. Their locations are as follows:
