Labor Department to hold orientation sessions for displaced Georgia-Pacific plywood mill workers

LOGANSPORT –The Louisiana Department of Labor’s Rapid Response Unit will hold a series of orientation sessions to assist the 280 employees who lost their jobs when Georgia-Pacific closed its Logansport plywood mill on Oct. 30.

Two-hour worker orientation sessions will be conducted at 7 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15 at the old Logansport High School Gym at 1009 Gum St. in space donated by First Baptist Church of Logansport.

The former employees are urged to call the Rapid Response toll-free hotline at 1-866-551-0360 to schedule one of the four sessions.

“The Logansport plywood mill has already closed, so we have a unique situation,” said Rapid Response Manager Bonnie McKneely. “We need to get the word out to all the affected employees that we are here to assist them.”

A worker transition center will open Monday, Nov. 19 at 606 Main St., in a building donated by the Logansport Chamber of Commerce. The center will offer a variety of transition services to the employees from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays through the end of December. A complete listing of services provided by the center will be given to employees at the orientation sessions on Nov. 15.
