BATON ROUGE - Initial claims for unemployment insurance for the week ending September 19, 2009, increased to 4,767 from the previous week’s total of 4,280. Initial claims were below the comparable week ending September 20, 2008, figure of 28,080, because the 2008 data reflected initial unemployment claims filed after Hurricane Gustav.
The four-week moving average of initial claims increased to 4,677 from the previous week’s average of 4,588.
Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed for the week ending September 19, 2009, increased to 60,797 from the previous week’s total of 59,558. The increase was spread throughout several industry sectors. Continued weeks claimed were above the comparable week ending September 20, 2008, figure of 35,542.
The four-week moving average of continued weeks claimed decreased to 60,868 from the previous week’s average of 61,524.

UI Weekly Claims Data Sheet is a new feature now available on the LWC’s Web site. This feature will print out a report with initial and continued claims for the current selection, prior week, and prior year. Weekly claims data can be accessed back to the week ending January 5, 2008. Begin on the LWC home page and select Labor Market Information (LMI). Scroll down the LMI page to the LMI Products section and select Unemployment Insurance (UI) Claims.
